Dorothy "Sande" Edwards

I’ve always been fascinated by color and as a child, I would mix up food colors and use them to draw on any paper in the house. A lot of times I’d find myself alone, and I’d take shoe boxes and cut them up into shapes of furniture. I’d make a cardboard shoebox house and put the furniture in it. I’d also cut out paper dolls and clothes and add colors to them.
Now, I use shapes and colors in my art. I do a lot of collages. I mix found objects with painting. I enjoy painting with acrylics and using shapes in my collages to express my point of view, which is to do African art.
I like the colors in African art and that African art has a lot of nice shapes, like zebras. I like the dark colors of African animals.
I feel excited when I’m doing art – like I don’t want to stop. It’s like something comes over me.
